Dating to the 1970s, this 5.1x10.7 ft hand knotted wool Turkish rug from Anatolia features a tribal area design with geometric motifs on a dark indigo field. The pile and foundation are wool, and the weaving reflects traditional village craftsmanship of the period.
Symbolism of the rug:
The large central figure is an anthropomorphic motif – a stylized human form often interpreted in Anatolian weaving as a guardian presence or life force. Above it, the Tree of Life rises upward, symbolizing growth, continuity and the connection between earth and sky.
The paired birds represent harmony and blessing; in village symbolism they are often linked to protection of the home. The horned animals – likely goats or deer – traditionally stand for prosperity, resilience and strength. Small diamond shapes throughout the field function as protective amulets, commonly understood as “evil eye” guards. The repeated vessels and small tree forms reference fertility, abundance and the idea of a thriving household.
Together, these symbols create a woven narrative about protection, life, and prosperity – themes deeply rooted in Anatolian village tradition.
